STOPPING DISTANCE:
TAILGAITING OR FOLLOWING TOO CLOSELY:
Stopping a car involves 3 factors
Perception Distance + Reaction Distance +
Breaking Distance = Stopping distance
Example at 40 mph =
- 103 ft. of perception distance (just to realize you need to stop)
- 44 Ft. of reaction distance (for your foot to hit the brake)
- 76 feet of breaking distance (for your car to actually slow down and stop)
= 233 ft, a full block in many areas!
WHAT’S THE CORRECT FOLLOWING DISTANCE?
3 seconds. When the car in front of you passes an object, you should pass
that object 3 seconds later.
